“Umm, Detective?” Officer Murray said. He was just a big kid, really. Scrawny, oily, always tripping over his size thirteen feet. “I think you’re going to want to hear this.”

“Hear what?” Flora asked, leaning back wearily to face him. She had been up all night. Now that she was fifty-five, all-nighters took a significant toll, both mentally and physically.

Murray, by comparison, was anything but weary. The excitement of working such a high-profile case had pumped him full of vim and vigour. “A man was killed last night, beaten to death with a metal bar stool at a place called Dewy’s over in Rockdale.”

“Yikes. That’s pretty violent for Rockdale. Any other reason I should care?”

“Yeah, the fingerprints. They were able to lift some off one of the legs of the stool. It’s still too early to say definitively, but it looks like a match for Clive Berringer. There are also indications that a woman was there.”

“Well, fuck a duck,” Flora said. “I suppose we’d best get our asses to Rockdale.”

“That’s not all. Seems our grieving husband has a curious past.”

“Oh, yeah? How so?”

“Well, he wasn’t born Neil Patterson, but Adam Neil Hughes. His parents changed his name officially in 1986, right before they uprooted the family from their fancy home in Uxbridge and relocated to Winnipeg. Patterson was the mother’s maiden name. She died of cancer three years ago, but the dad, Peter Hughes, is still living out there. He’s a retired lawyer.”

“That is curious. Let’s get him on the phone and see what the name change was all about. A lawyer, eh? What kind?”

“Criminal.”
